Tennessee man drives a school bus full of shelter animals out of Florence's path

To say Tony Alsup has a heart for animals is an understatement. The 51-year-old truck driver from Tennessee started rescuing shelter animals in the wake of Hurricane Harvey last year, and then did the same with Hurricane Irma.

When he learned that Hurricane Florence was expected to bring flooding to the Carolinas, he contacted coastal shelters to offer help evacuating dogs and cats. Of course, the shelters accepted the offer.

All across the region, animal lovers lined up to offer shelter to pets. Still, some animals were left behind.

So Alsup took the seats out of a school bus and drove to the Carolina coast. He created his own version of Noah's Ark, rescuing what one shelter called "leftovers’ — the dogs with blocky heads, the ones with heartworm... the ones no one else will ever take. And he got them to safety. Not the most conventional evacuation, but surely the one with the most heart.”

In all, Alsup rescued 53 dogs and 11 cats and drove them to safety in Alabama. There, his friend Angela Eib-Maddux, opened her privately run dog shelter for the animals and gave them baths and TLC. Between their established networks of animal lovers and other shelters, all the displaced refugees found safety within days.

Animal shelter gets 12,000 pounds of food thanks to a third grader's birthday wish

Adisynn Kiker didn't want gifts for her 8th birthday. Instead, she asked for people to donate to the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake near her home in Tool, Texas. Her mom Jessica posted Adisynn's request on Facebook, and it went viral.

Adisynn and her mom helped with collections, and donations poured in from individuals and businesses. In a few days, the shelter posted a list of everything received in Adisynn's name:

• 580 pounds of cat litter.
• 11,591 pounds of dog food.
• 152 pounds of cat food.
• 28 cans of cat food.
• 43 gallons of bleach.
• 7 containers of laundry soap.
• 7 containers of Simple Green.
• 60 rolls of paper towels.

The shelter posted, "Thank you again for everything!!!! Our fur babies greatly appreciate it."

Bus driver stops to feed a stray dog every day for 2 years

A couple years ago, a Canadian bus driver spotted an emaciated stray digging through the trash. A volunteer with Feed the FurBabies Canada, the anonymous woman was touched. She returned to the site with a bag of dog food and offered it to the stray dog. He devoured it. The next day, she spotted the same dog waiting along her route, wagging his tail. She stopped her bus and tossed him another helping of dog food. The pattern was set.

Every day since then, the dog has waited for her bus. In all kinds of weather, tail wagging, he stays beside the road while she pulls up and stops the bus. When she opens the door and tosses the bag of food, he grabs it in his teeth and hurries off.

The local animal shelter does not have enough room to house all the area's strays. There aren't enough foster homes for them either. Even so, this woman saw something she could do to help this dog. And she's done it every day for the last 2 years.
